General information
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SWPS) is composed of three Departments: Department of Culture and Communication, Department of Sociology, and Department of Political Science, as well as three independent Chairs: Chair of Philosophy, Chair of International Relations, and Chair of Law. It offers six teaching tracks: Cultural Studies, Sociology, Political Science, Philosophy, International Relations, and Journalism. In the nearest future a five-year MA program in law will be launched.

Faculty opens opportunities for interdisciplinary research and teaching. Cultural Studies is taught at PhD, MA, and BA levels, Sociology and Political Science - at MA and BA levels, while Philosophy, International Relations, and Journalism are taught at BA level.

The academic staff aims at excellence in teaching at all levels. The Faculty offers students wide possibilities of specialized modules and a variety of optional courses and research and diploma seminars that allow developing individualized programs of studies.

Department of Culture and Communication

In the Department of Culture and Communication the academic staff put special emphasis on linking high standards of humanistic education with teaching practical skills in the broadly defined field of culture animation. Over twenty PhD students have been affiliated with the Department, and four of them have already successfully defended their theses and are currently employed at the Department. The interdisciplinary PhD program (carried out in co-operation with psychologists from SWPS and Polish Academy of Sciences) builds solid grounds for innovative approach to cultural and communication studies.

The Department's academic staff is involved in a number of research projects and publishes widely in renowned academic journals. Several international and domestic conferences, seminars and other academic events have been organized in the last few years.

Recently the Department has launched teaching track in Journalism and Social Communication that aims at offering professional education for future journalists and media experts. The academics as well as practicing editors and reporters offer a range of courses that allow students acquire the understanding of media systems workings as well as practical skills of journalistic work.

Department of Sociology

In teaching, Sociology - on top of a number of standard courses - draws students‘ attention to the issues of local and regional communities, international migrations, gender studies, and advanced social research methods (both qualitative and quantitative).

The research projects carried out by the Department's academic staff in the last few years are devoted to local communities resources, economic activity of the disabled, as well as adaptation to rapid social changes.

Department of Political Science

Political Science as taught at SWPS differs from many similar teaching tracks across the country by its emphasis on comparative empirical research. Students learn how political institutions work and public opinion is being formed, they acquire skills of public opinion analysis and learn political marketing and communication techniques. Additionally, Political Science teaching track at SWPS includes courses in area studies (North America, the EU and East Asia).

The faculty members of the Department are actively involved in international research projects in comparative politics as well as individual projects in political thought and area studies. Political Science Department participates in Polish General Electoral Study (PGSW), the single electoral study in Poland. Being a member of European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) Political Science Department at SWPS is present at major yearly and biennial political science academic events.

Chair of Philosophy

The distinctive features of philosophy at SWPS include:

  • interdisciplinarity (students attend a variety of courses in social sciences and humanities as well as psychology thus acquiring a broad and comprehensive knowledge and skills in contemporary thought),
  • small groups, which facilitate a more direct and intensive contact with the lecturers
  • domination of seminars and workshops in the curriculum aimed at cultivating the skills of carrying out an enlighten debate

Chair of International Relations

The relatively new Chair of International Relations takes pride in preparing and successfully carrying out a unique teaching track that is focused on the practical skills of diplomacy, international security and intercultural relations. The teaching track has attracted great numbers of students who are interested in pursuing careers in various international organizations. The Chair of International Relations co-operates with the present and former officials of Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is involved in the research project focused on advanced conflict prevention and „good practice" in international relations. The Chair of International Relations is preparing a major international conference that will be hosted by SWPS in 2009 and will be devoted to the European Union and Danube countries.

Chair of Law

The youngest child of the Faculty, established June, 2008. It's major task is to launch MA law program in 2009/2010.
