The Center in a new type of research- and- teaching institution. Its main focus in on the political and social problems of contemporary Middle East, and the Center acts as coordinator of research in this area, conducted throughout Poland. Since 2004 it has been involved in the publication of the journal Bliski Wschód. Społeczeństwa - Polityka - Tradycje (Middle East: Societies, Politics, Traditions), edited by Poland's leading experts on Middle East and Islam.

Centre for East Asian Studies

The Center provides instruction in Chinese language as well as in Burmese. It also offers elective courses in various aspects of East Asian societies, politics and cultures. The Center has organized a number of conferences and symposiums in East Asian Studies.

Since 2007 the Center has been publishing the journal Azja-Pacyfik: Społeczeństwo-Polityka-Gospodarka (Asia-Pacific: Society, Politics, Economy), devoted to contemporary East Asia. In 2006 SWPS obtained a grant from the Japanese government to expand its Oriental Library collections (at the end of 2007, it consisted of over 10,000 volumes).
