English courses - III year

History of the English Language (B.A. level 3rd year)
Lecture, 4 ECTS, Winter semester, CREDIT: EXAM

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the evolution of the English language, taking into consideration both synchronic and diachronic processes influencing its present shape. In particular, the course shall be devoted to the main periods of the English language history, Old English (~450 - 1100), Middle English (1100 - 1500), and Early Modern English (1500 - 1800), supplemented with the discussion of both pre-Old English and the 20th - 21st century data on English varieties. The internal history of changes to the language structure (grammar, phonology, spelling and lexis) will be discussed against the external background, explaining the influence of historical events on the shape of English in the course of time.

Contrastive English - Polish Grammar (B.A. level 3rd year)
Lecture, 4 ECTS, Summer semester, CREDIT: EXAM

Objectives of the course: to describe and explain major differences between English and Polish at the grammatical and lexical level by comparing equivalent sentences or phrases and analyzing them in terms of grammatical rules; to increase the students' awareness of the areas of potential interference applicable in teaching and translation.

English for Professional Uses I (B.A. level 3rd year)
Class / e-learning, 2 ECTS, Winter semester, CREDIT: TEST / ESSAY

The objective of the course is to give students an insight into the language of some of the most common professional domains. The course will focus on a variety of genres and present texts and vocabulary from each domain.

Academic Writing I & II (B.A. level 3rd year)
Class / e-learning, 2 / 2 ECTS, Winter / Summer semester, CREDIT: TEST / ESSAY

The aim of the course is to improve students' style of writing, improve the structure of students' essays and papers, and - above all - to show how to make an argument: express a point of view on a subject and support it with evidence. Students completing this course should be able to write an extended piece of argumentative prose demonstrating effective communication and the conventions of standard written English and proper research documentation.

B.A. Thesis Seminar I & II (B.A. level 3rd year)
6 / 6 ECTS, Winter / summer semester, CREDIT: TEST / ESSAY

The aim of the course is to supervise the writing of B.A. theses.

Students in the 3rd year are required to sign up for 2 Seminars in Cultural / Literary Studies (2 x 3 ECTS).
