Descriptive grammar III: Semantics and Pragmatics (B.A. level 2nd year)

Introduction to semantic and pragmatic analysis. The topics discussed include: Word meaning. Conceptual and connotative meaning. Semantic properties. Evidence for semantic properties (slips of the tongue). Semantic relationships. Homonymy and polysemy, lexical ambiguity. Phrase and sentence meanings. Principle of compositionality. Sentential meaning. Anomaly and uninterpretability. Metaphor. Idioms.

Introduction to Latin (B.A. level 2nd year)

General introduction to Latin grammar and the history of the Latin language.

Cross - Cultural Communication (B.A. level 2nd year)

The purpose of the course is to address selected issues in cross-cultural communication, with special reference to the role of language in making and breaking human relations in various communities and cultures. What is the connection between language and culture? What are the relations between language, mind and reality? What cultural patterns can we observe in the way people write and talk? The course will explore such issues from the perspective of an integrated approach to language and communication studies. Semiotic, cognitive pragmatic and social aspects of communication will be discussed and illustrated.

Second Language Acquisition (B.A. level 2nd year)

Objectives of the course: to equip students with the knowledge of basic theories and concepts of first and second language acquisition; to get the students acquainted with implications of SLA theories for language education; to enable the students to analyze and evaluate language learning strategies and language teaching methods; to get the students acquainted with the English and Polish metalanguage enabling them to read and discuss professional writings in the field of SLA and language education.

British Literature II (B.A. level 2nd year)

The aim of the course is to present the canonical works of British literature (from the 17th century to contemporary literature); the course focuses on the characteristic features of literary epochs, presents the works of literature against the wider background of the historical/cultural evolution.

American Literature I (B.A. level 2nd year)

This two-semester lecture course is meant to introduce students to major literary trends and the most important authors in the United States. The survey begins with a discussion of the Colonial period writings and ends with late twentieth century literature. Students who take this course are also supposed to participate in the parallel American Literature survey discussion-course where the most important, canonical texts (fiction and poetry) will be discussed.

American Civilisation (B.A. level 2nd year)

The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the leading themes in American Civilization Studies, including the major social trends, perceptions of race and gender, political culture, values and ideology, religion, the role of media, ideas in education, formulas of popular culture.

British Civilisation (B.A. level 2nd year)

The aim of the course is to present the way in which technological and scientific changes altered the course of British History and Culture. The topics discussed include: The Agricultural Revolution. The Industrial Revolution. Rise of the British Empire. Decolonisation. British Architecture, Music and Painting.

Introduction to Literary Theory (B.A. level 2nd year)

The task of the lecture is to familiarize students with contemporary theoretical approaches to literary studies in the context of traditional literary theory. An additional task of the course is to make students aware of the complexities arising from the interdisciplinary nature of literary studies and to encourage them to problematize certain literary issues rather than take them for granted.

Translation I & II (B.A. level 2nd year)

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the craft of translation. In particular, students will be provided with maximum practice at the basic level of issues arising in the process of simple translations that they may encounter in their everyday lives. These will include linguistic and cultural differences in a variety of styles.

Practical Grammar III (B.A. level 2nd year)
Class, 2 ECTS, Winter semester, CREDIT: TEST / ESSAY

The course is meant for 2nd year students who have successfully completed PG module 1 and 2. Students are expected to have possessed the knowledge of the structure of the English phrase, including VP, NP, and AdjP. The aim of the course is to raise students' grammatical awareness and expand their linguistic competence, with special emphasis put on the structure of the multiclausal sentence. Students acquire theoretical knowledge on mechanisms governing English grammar, illustrated by a range of practical exercises.

Writing III & IV (B.A. level 2nd year)
Class / e-learning, 2 / 2 ECTS, Winter / Summer semester, CREDIT: TEST / ESSAY

In the last two semesters of the two-year writing sequence students concentrate on style, discuss what constitutes good style, analyze what makes prose clear and readable, learn how to vary sentence emphasis depending on the intended meaning, and practice shaping clear sentences of varying lengths. At the same time, points of grammar which usually cause problems are discussed, for example: subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent agreement and the placement of modifiers.

English in Media and Culture (B.A. level 2nd year)
Class / e-learning, 2 ECTS, Winter semester, CREDIT: TEST / ESSAY

The objective of the course is to expand students' vocabulary connected with media and culture as well as develop skills that are relevant for successful communication in an English-speaking media and culture context. The course is based on up-to-date authentic materials that acquaint students with the language of journalism and provide them with opportunities to broaden their knowledge of such topics as architecture, the visual arts, theatre, fashion, and gender.
