The workshop will consist of three parts each lasting from 75 to 120 minutes. The minimum requirement for participants is to have a command of English at the B1 level. The objective of the first part is to teach workshop participants how to create a good CV and a good covering letter in English. The second part will focus on job interviews and on how to make one’s English an effective and natural means of communication. The third part looks at two forms of communication in the workplace i.e. on the phone and by email and provides a light follow-up in the form of a humorous scene taken from a TV comedy series “The Office”.
PART 1 – APPLYING FOR A JOB: DOCUMENTS
I. Curriculum vitae
- brainstorming: what a good CV should contain and what are the most common errors when writing a CV (pair work followed by a group discussion)
- vocabulary: names for various parts of a CV (headings and categories e.g. employment history, skills, qualifications, personal details etc.) and specific words and phrases commonly used in each category (how to describe one’s education history, how to present one’s achievements etc.)
- common mistakes: analyzing sample CVs and discussing errors, giving reasons and explanations• practice: completing sample CVs with missing headings, correcting errors in sample CVs
- creating a draught version of your own CV
- pair work (or group work): commenting on the CVs written by one’s partners, giving feedback
II. Covering letter
- brainstorming: what are the objectives of a covering letter? What should a good covering letter include? (pair work followed by a group discussion)
- vocabulary: formal language used in covering letters, functional language (various structures commonly used in covering letters)
- analyzing sample letters: commenting on their strengths and weaknesses, error correction
- practice: gap filling exercises, multiple choice cloze etc (using the vocabulary introduced in the previous part of the workshop)
- creating a draught version of your own covering letter
- pair work (or group work): commenting on the covering letters prepared by one’s partners, giving feedback
PART 2 – APPLYING FOR A JOB: INTERVIEW
- listening to (or watching) sample fragments of job interviews: commenting on the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate, giving feedback and advice
- vocabulary – semi-formal language used during job interviews, functional language (introducing oneself, responding to questions, hesitating – ‘buying’ time, how to make your English sound natural, reacting to difficult or unexpected questions etc)
- practice – vocabulary games and exercises (using the vocabulary presented in the previous part of the workshop)
- role play: in pairs (candidate, interviewer) role playing a job interview on the basis of the given context, giving feedback
PART 3 – COMMUNICATION IN THE WORKPLACE
I. On the phone
- starting and ending a phone conversation: formal and informal language (on the basis of sample conversations)
- telephone problems (functional language – e.g. dialing a wrong number, leaving and taking a message, asking for repetition, losing connection etc.)
- practice – role playing phone conversation using prompts (pair work)
II. E-mails
- formal and informal e-mails, commenting on the language, analyzing ways of opening and closing an email (greetings, closing formulas etc.)
- practice – completing emails with missing information, gap filling, multiple choice cloze etc.
III In the office
- watching a selected extract from the American version of the TV comedy series “The Office” (with subtitles) that shows some typical office situation in a distorted mirror
- comprehension questions
- follow-up: on the basis of the film extract participants prepare a list of dos and don’ts when it comes to communication in the workplace
