About the Conference
The 8th conference of the Polish Society for Human and Evolution Studies (PTNCE’22) is thrilled to welcome academics from across the world to Gdańsk, Poland.
The PTNCE conference is a periodical, international meeting bringing together a wide range of scholars who use the evolutionary framework in their research. This is a truly interdisciplinary event, as the guests have remarkably diverse backgrounds, such as anthropology, archaeology, behavioral sciences, linguistics, psychology, and primatology.
This year, the conference is organized by a group of scientists who are very much devoted to the idea that applying evolutionary perspectives to studying the mind is essential for understanding human behavior. The PTNCE’22 program will include plenary lectures by leaders in the field, including: Peter Jonason from the University of Padua and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University, Šárka Kaňková from Charles University in Czech Republic, Chris Kuzawa from Northwestern University, and Wojciech Załuski from Jagiellonian University in Poland.
The PTNCE'22 is a hybrid event. We would love for you to attend in person if you can. However, our online option allows for remote participation.
The conference is organized by the Center for Research on Biological Basis of Social Behavior at SWPS University in Sopot and the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Gdańsk, in cooperation with the Polish Society for Human and Evolution Studies.

Visual (Face) Stimuli Workshop with Dr. Sonja Windhager
A one-day workshop on visual (facial) stimuli creation and computation will be held just before the PTNCE 2022 conference. Dr. Sonja Windhager (Department of Evolutionary Anthropology, University of Vienna) will explain how to create visual stimuli useful for research at the intersection of cognition and biology. She will also demonstrate how to measure them effectively using TPS software (based on the Geometric Morphometric approach).
The workshop will include three sessions: taking photos, landmark positioning, and shape analysis.

Conference Venue
The conference will take place at the SWSP University's Faculty of Psychology in Sopot. The campus neighbors a historic Hipodrom—a horse racing track built in the 19th century, and a station of the local railway line (Sopot Wyścigi) that connects the Tri-city of Gdańsk, Gdynia, and Sopot. Modern spaces with multimedia equipment, disability access, and modern infrastructure, as well as a convenient and picturesque location in Sopot make SWPS University an ideal place for our conference.

The Sopot Campus provides parking spaces and is equipped with ramps and restrooms that meet accessibility guidelines. Additionally, all rooms are marked with numbers in Braille alphabet.
About the City of Sopot
Sopot is a seaside resort city situated on the shores of the Baltic Sea. It is located between Gdańsk and Gdynia. The three cities together form the metropolitan area of Tri-city.
Sopot is also a renowned health spa and a popular tourist destination boasting the longest wooden pier in Europe. It leads 515.5 meters out to the Bay of Gdańsk! Among its other attractions is the so-called Inhalation Mushroom, a fountain of bromide spring water located in Southern Park (bromide water was once considered a common cure for all kinds of serious illnesses). The lively main street Bohaterów Monte Cassino, fondly known as Monciak, is famous for its restaurants, cafés, and clubs. Sopot blends a vibrant culinary scene, rich history, and diverse architecture with beautiful parks and open green spaces. The charm of the city and its bustling cultural life make it a perfect place to spend a few days.

How to get to Sopot
By plane:
- the nearest airport is located in Gdańsk, just 20 km from the center of Sopot. You can easily reach Sopot by 122 bus or PKM (Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway) train.
By train:
- the railway station is located in the city center, and all long-distance trains stop there.
Traveling around Tricity area
The light rail (SKM) will easily take you anywhere in the Tri-city area, which means great flexibility in finding accommodation. The conference venue is just 100 meters from the Sopot Wyścigi train station. Trains from track one travel towards Gdynia main station (Gdynia Główna) and track two—towards Gdańsk Śródmieście.
The best way to get around the Tri-city area is using public transport. Apps such as Jakdojade or SkyCash will help you plan your journey and buy tickets.

Plenary Speakers
Peter Jonason
Holds the rank of Associate Professor at the University of Padua and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University. He is most known for his work on the Dark Triad traits— he is in the top 2% of social and personality psychologists in terms of citations. In 2014 he won the IgNobel award in psychology for showing that the traits might be associated with a tendency to occupy a night-time niche. Much of his work is adaptationist and psychometric investigations of how the traits are associated with functioning in interpersonal relationships (e.g., relationship choices), cross-cultural patterns, and social (e.g., prejudice) and intrapersonal (e.g., happiness) consequences. His research also focuses on how people solve mate shortages, how they make decisions in the initial courtship stages and cyberpsychology. Šárka Kaňková
Is an Assistant Professor of theoretical and evolutionary biology at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. Her research interests include various aspects of human reproduction. Šárka studies the effects of the parasite Toxoplasma gondii on human reproductive biology, including secondary sex ratio, child development, and fertility. Currently, her research focuses on the adaptive function of the behavioral immune system during pregnancy, especially longitudinal changes in disgust sensitivity during pregnancy, and determinants that could be related to these changes - immune system activity and hormonal changes.
Christopher Kuzawa
Is a Professor of Anthropology and Faculty Fellow with the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University. His research explores developmental influences on adult biology and health, the psychobiology of human fatherhood, non-genetic forms of biological inheritance, and the energetics and evolution of the human brain. He is an elected member of the US National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he co-directs the Health Inequality Network of the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Working Group.
Wojciech Załuski
Is a professor, specializing in legal and moral philosophy, affiliated with the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland. He authored numerous books (including The Limits of Naturalism: A Game-theoretic Critique of Justice as Mutual Advantage, Evolutionary Theory and Legal Philosophy, Game Theory in Jurisprudence, Law and Evil: the Evolutionary Perspective, and The Insanity Defense: A Philosophical Analysis) and articles on legal, moral and political philosophy, moral psychology and philosophy of science.
Our mission and actions have always been based on respect for the rights and dignity of others. Thus we must speak out against all aggression and express our hope for a just and lasting peace to return to all of Europe. On February 24, 2022, Russia launched military aggression against Ukraine, which was widely condemned by the world's nations (UN resolution A/RES/ES-11/1). We deplore the actions of the Russian Federation. We express support for those brave academics in Russia who voice their dissent against the invasion.
