Chinese creative sector in the Xi Jinping era – between politics and the market (podcast)

Cultural and Creative Sectors (CSS) are a robust part of the Chinese economy. With increasing central control in the Xi Jinping era, they are subject not only to the ebbs and flows of the ultra-competitive Chinese market, but also to the ever-changing policies of the state. What is the specificity of the Chinese cultural field? What is it’s organisational and budgetary structure? How far do the various regulators influence the CSS? In what ways has the legal framework of CSS activity changed in recent years, and how does the censorship system work in practice? What is the role of state-owned enterprises, and what are the local characteristics of the Chinese market? The podcast will present the results of latest research of the CSS as part of the China Horizons project.

The project “China Horizons – Dealing With a Resurgent China” (DWARC) has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement number 101061700.

Sinologist, translator, cultural manager. His areas of expertise include Chinese cultural sector, cultural diplomacy in East Asia, ancient Chinese literature and thought, Chinese art theory. For the last few years he has concentrated on analyses of pre-Qin political texts, mostly the Lüshi Chunqiu and the Zhanguoce. In modern China research, he is interested in the historical and cultural roots of transformational processes, and in the tension between tradition and modernity.

Professor, Head of the Creative Economy Research Center, SWPS University Economist, culture researcher and scholar, specialising in the creative economy Professor Dorota Ilczuk is an economist specializing in the management of the cultural and creative industries sector. She researches issues concerning civic societies, creative economy, professional arts and culture labor market, and the role of producers in creative economy. Professor Ilczuk is a precursor of cultural economics as a scientific discipline. She authored and co-authored several books, including “Ekonomika kultury” (Cultural economics) (2015), and over 100 reports and articles on cultural economics, cultural industries, cultural policy, civic society, and the non-profit sector.

Ph.D. candidate, Asian Civilisation Research Center, SWPS University Manager specialising in the cultural and creative industry sector management and the design of sustainable development strategies through culture for municipalities. Her research interests oscillate around the creative economy, professional arts and culture labour market, and the impact of short-term mobility on the further development of artists' careers and culture as a factor for the sustainable development of cities. She has been associated with CCI for over 12 years. Since 2018 she has been a member of the steering committee of UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Currently, she is the director of Music Export Poland, the advisor to the Board of the Society of Authors ZAiKS and coordinator of the Europena Music Exporters Exchange network As an independent consultant for the development of creative industries, she has been cooperating with a number of cities across the world.
